Illegal Firearm Modification and Removal of Identification Marks

It is a felony to obliterate or alter the name, model, serial number, or other mark of identification on a firearm. Even if you did not remove the serial number or other identification marks on the firearm yourself, if you have possession of such a firearm, law enforcement officials and prosecutors will be entitled to presume that you were responsible for removing the serial number or other identification marks. You may be charged with a felony for simply possessing such a firearm. You also may be charged with a felony for buying or selling such a firearm. If you used an altered firearm in the commission of a crime, you may be subject to substantial enhanced penalties.
