Obstruction of Justice and Perjury

If you, your business or business associates are being investigated for a crime -- any crime -- and decide to cooperate together to either lie, not disclose, or otherwise impede, mislead, or deceive the investigators and prosecutors, you may be subject to criminal prosecution under RICO and other organized crime statutes. Even "bending" or "shading" the truth or claiming false ignorance when federal or state agents interrogate you without counsel or time to think about the best response may constitute a serious crime. Ironically, the criminal penalties for obstructing the investigation may be worse than the penalties that would have been imposed for the underlying crime. You can be prosecuted and convicted for obstruction of justice and perjury even if you or someone else was innocent of the underlying crime you were trying to cover up.
